{"id":4,"date":"2011-03-15T15:40:58","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T15:40:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dial-a-grue.com\/gory\/?p=4"},"modified":"2011-03-15T15:40:58","modified_gmt":"2011-03-15T15:40:58","slug":"grue-brains-the-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dial-a-grue.com\/gory\/?p=4","title":{"rendered":"Grue Brains &#8212; the plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since my original concept was to power this with an <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/\">Arduino<\/a> microcontroller platform, I&#8217;ve decided to see if I can power it with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/products\/9219\">Arduino Pro<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sparkfun.com\/\">Sparkfun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why Arduino? Why not code to the bare uC? \u00c2\u00a0Arduino has got a nice IDE, which makes development easier, and it&#8217;s got lots of <a title=\"Shields for sale at Adafruit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adafruit.com\/index.php?main_page=index&amp;cPath=17_21\">pluggable<\/a> hardware that simplifies interfacing with stuff like <a title=\"Adafruit SD data logging shield\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adafruit.com\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=17_21&amp;products_id=243\">SD cards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of possible problems with this.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Arduino Pro has a incredibly\u00c2\u00a0anemic 5V regulator. \u00c2\u00a0In a previous project, it couldn&#8217;t handle an ethernet shield&#8217;s additional power draw.<\/li>\n<li>The Arduino uses a ATMega 328, which will only give me about 30K of program space. \u00c2\u00a0Still, Zork used to run in a lot less memory.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If power is a problem, I could always throw an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adafruit.com\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=17&amp;products_id=50\">UNO<\/a> in there, or build my own regulator. \u00c2\u00a0 But if I just can&#8217;t squeeze the z-code interpreter into 30K, then maybe I&#8217;ll use a <a href=\"http:\/\/sanguino.cc\/\">Sanguino<\/a>, or a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adafruit.com\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=17&amp;products_id=191\">Mega<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since my original concept was to power this with an Arduino microcontroller platform, I&#8217;ve decided to see if I can power it with an Arduino Pro from Sparkfun.
